Great Lakes at Bloodbuzzed

Great Lakes. Formed in Athens, Georgia in 1996 (and initially aligned to the Elephant 6 collective), but based in Brooklyn, NY, since 2002, this ensemble leaded by Ben Crum has released five albums and several 7″ and EPs to date. Initially a trio, they debuted in the year 2000 with self-titled LP followed by ‘The Distance Between’ in 2002, two albums with a distinct, light-hearted psych-pop. But Crum, the only original and founding member along the years and Co. kept evolving towards a more introspective, enduring American folk-rock with their next releases, ‘Diamond Times‘ in 2006 and ‘Ways to Escape’ in 2010. Now the quintet is back with ‘Wild Vision‘, out since this January through their own label Loose Trucks. Moody, confident, warm, the tunes are the perfect proof of a musician and a band in total command of “their game”, summoning the spirits of Gram Parsons and Alex Chilton, and making a work of art of every song. Serious stuff here.

High Violets at Bloodbuzzed

Hailing from Portland, Oregon, this unbeatable named band formed in 1998, from the ashes of the Bella Low breakup. Initially the trio of founder members Clint Sargent, Luke Strahota and Violet Bianca Grace, the line-up changed dramatically with Grace leaving very soon, while the remaining duo recruited Allen Davis of Echoplex and the amazing voice of Kaitlyn ni Donovan, self-releasing their first EP ‘Dream Away‘ in 1999. In 2002 came out their mini-album ’44 Down‘, followed by ‘Invitation’, another self-released EP, in 2005 and their debut album ‘To Where You Are‘ a year later on Reverb Records. After a remixes album in 2007, the High Violets delivered ‘Cinéma‘, sophomore LP in 2010, out via Comet Rock Records, probably their most celebrated release to date. Now, after another line-up change (Davis left, being replaced by Colin Sheridan) they are back with ‘Heroes and Halos’, scheduled for early April through Saint Marie Records. A record you shouldn’t miss by any chance: a haunting collection of dreampop/shoegaze tunes recalling beloved ones like Slowdive, The Sundays or Soft Science, leaded by the magnetic vocals of Kaitlyn, the layered guitars and lush arrangements. Gorgeous sounds enveloped in haze.

Witching Waves at Bloodbuzzed

Hailing from London, UK, the band is the creation of vocalist/drummer Emma Wigham (Weird Menace) and vocalist/guitarist Mark Jasper (Sound Savers Recording Studio), who joined forces in April 2013 with a first tape arriving at the end of that same year by Supplex Cassettes. Two more tapes followed, a split covers tape with band As Ondas in 2014, and the ‘Concrete‘ single tape that September, which anticipated the release of their first LP, ‘Fear of Falling Down‘, out in December, as well as the signature with the always recommendable Soft Power Records, and the addition of Ed Shellard at the bass expanding the band to a trio. A couple of limited cassettes, including another split, now with Rattle, whom with they toured, has now preceded the arrival of sophomore album ‘Crystal Cafe‘, out just now on Soft Power and our dear friends HHBTM Records. You should check it immediately, because their music is a sonic blast. Early Cure, Wire, Sonic Youth, Buzzcocks,Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Pylon… you name it. Waves of noise, echoes of punk, a relentless urgency, a threatening edge, a fearless attitude, a mystery hiding in fuzz. An early MUST of 2016.

Animal Daydream at Bloodbuzzed

We move North to Gothenburg to meet Daniel Fridlund Brandt and Alexander Wahl, a very enigmatic duo that appeared on the scene in 2014. They have released two EPs to date, both out thanks to the always reliable Jigsaw Records, first debut ‘Easy Pleasures‘ in January 2015 and now, exactly a year later, ‘Citrus‘. Eight majestic tunes of psych-pop and sunshine pop, recalling The Byrds, the joyous side of CSNY and, looking forward in time, the poppier side of our dear Teenage Fanclub. Harmonies, chiming guitars and the smoothiest vibes from a band fated to make you smile. A pure delight.

Antlered Aunt Lord at Bloodbuzzed

Second trip of the week to most beloved Athens, Georgia, to meet Jesse Stinnard, Tunabunny’s eccentric drummer, phantom screamer, compulsive reader and unique musician (the press note says his solo shows are truly legendary). Now this mad genius has decided to put some order into his several-hundred song backlog to release his debut album, ‘Ostensibly Formerly Stunted (And On Fire)‘ out since late November through Happy Happy Birthday To Me Records. It’s a carnival of sorts, They Might Be Giants, early R.E.M.,Pixies… I know, I know. I’m reciting some of the quintessential American alternative bands. But Stinnart seems to be the missing link between them. Fun, risky yet powerfully melodic. What an exciting chaos. Many thanks, again, Mike!

Postal Blue at Bloodbuzzed

Hailing from Brasilia, Brazil, today I’m happy to bring you the story of Adriano do Couto, the man behind one of the best records of 2015. The project started out in 1998, as a full-fledged quartet on search of the perfect pop tune (Byrds, Smiths, Go-Betweens). American label Drive-In Records quickly reached them to release theirself-titled debut EP released in 2000, with our dearShelflife Records coming second to release sophomore EP ‘Weather Sensitive‘ two years later. In 2004 arrived debut LP ‘International Breeze‘, with the band shifting their sound from guitar indiepop to a subdued and adventurous bossanova-infused folk pop. Another EP, the moody and sung in Portuguese ‘Road to happiness‘ came next in 2006 on Canadian label Humblebee Recordings. But then the band entered into a hiatus that became final, so singer and lead songwriter Adriano, keeping Postal Blue‘s name, released a 3″ single on Cloudberry Records in 2008 and a 7″ as part of the Dufflecoat / Jigsaw Singles Club co-release. Finally, at the end of past November, after 11 years, the band’s sophomore album ‘Of Love & Other Affections‘ arrived via Jigsaw. Gorgeous indiepop from start to finish, dreamiest, melancholic, elegant, classic, always arresting. Been a long way, but the reward is priceless.

Lunchbox at Bloodbuzzed

Let’s move to Oakland, California, to meet Tim Brown & Donna McKean (both members of Hard Left) and their back and forth story. Formed around 1994, they released four albums, and some 7″ and EPs before they went on hiatus in 2002. Then came Birds of California, new band’s incarnation that delivered the EP ‘Great Expectations‘ on February Records in 2010, and one record, ‘One and Only‘, in 2013 on Jigsaw Records. But the duo changed back their name to Lunchbox, coming in full form with LP ‘Lunchbox Loves You‘ last year and now completing the rebirth with EP ‘Smash Hits‘ out this summer. Recalling Boyracer, Rocketship, The Faintest Ideas, their bubblegum pop with a punk edge is as full of hooks and instant-catchy melodies as fuzz and sharp edges. Smashing pop, really!

Presents for Sally at Bloodbuzzed

Many thanks for this oneMike. This powerful British trio formed in 2009, with track ‘Flowers Falling Sideways‘ being featured on the Invada records compilation ‘The Secret Garden’, quickly followed that November with the praised 7″ single ‘Catch Your Fall‘. A year later arrived debut album ‘A Touch of Joy, A Touch of Sadness‘ plus 7” single ‘Anything Anymore‘. After a couple of  quiet years and a self-financed 7” single for Xmas 2014, now they are back with sophomore LP ‘Colours & Changes‘, out now by Saint Marie Records. A fantastic voyage to the realms of shoegaze, at times shiny, delicate and melodically blissful, others edgier and menacing. An extraordinary present for all of us.

Static Daydream at Bloodbuzzed

Among the most exciting bands reaching my mailbox is the latest project of Paul Baker (Skywave, Ceremony), alongside his girlfriend and musical partner Jamie Casey. Beginning in 2012, their highly praised debut EP, ‘The Only One‘ came out on Moon Sounds Records in 2014. Now it’s time for their first self-titled album, out at the end of August on Saint Marie Records. 11 blistering tunes between noise and dreampop, melting thunderous guitars, drenched in reverb and crunching distortion, with harmonies, a ton of melodic hooks and ethereal landscapes. All you have to do is embrace the (not so static) daydream…

American Culture at Bloodbuzzed

Today, we are extremely happy to unveil our 30 favourite songs of the year so far. As we did with the best records /EPs list, the tunes are listed in alphabetic order, taking in mind two rules: they have been released during 2015, and just one song per group (a really hard decision in some cases). We encourage you to enjoy the complete playlist in our soundcloud page! And to check our 201120122013 and 2014 selections!
