Joanna Gruesome at CMJ

Welsh non-harpists Joanna Gruesome put out one of our favorite albums of 2013, the gritty garage effort Weird Sister. Now the band is back with news of an upcoming 12-inch split with U.K. pop act Trust Fund, which will feature three tracks from each band.

Jerome (Liar) is one of Joanna Gruesome’s contributions to the that split, a track that artfully balances toothy twee with unexpected wallops of scratchy reverb. The 12-inch is out in September on HHBTM in the U.S. and the band’s own label, Reeks Of Effort, in the U.K.

Muuy Biien at CMJ

Each week the CMJ staff sifts through thousands of radio playlists that contribute to the weekly CMJ charts. In the Chart Discovery column, we highlight exciting artists, albums, and songs brought to our attention by the charts of our reporting panel of college and non-commercial radio stations. This round’s favorites come to us via WUOG in Athens, GA, and WPRB in Princeton, NJ.

Muuy Biien on WUOG

A mix of steady-build reflective ambiance and angst-laden angular action, Athens punks Muuy Biien’s D.I.Y., newly released on HHBTM, was sitting pretty at the No. 1 spot on the always-local-scene-supporting WUOG’s charts.
