Moon Types at Pop! Stereo

The Moon Types single Know the Reason is a perfect slice of indie pop neatly served on a 7” platter.   Beaming with west coast vibes, radiant horns, and mellow melodies this little record is a bit of heaven via Sweden.  The siblings Klein (Jesper and Josefin) know their way around a pop song and manipulate all the tricks within one to create rays of jangly, jolly jubilance that’s as firmly rooted in 60’s pop as it is modern indie.
Know the Reason is a near perfect record that’s unfortunately short at twelve minutes long.  For those twelve minutes, however, indie pop bliss is all ours and it’s lit by the glow of the moon (types).  It’s been a while since Swedish indie pop was all the rage, but The Moon Types haven’t forgotten and they clearly Know The Reason why it was to begin with.

Well, it ain’t ABBA, but Stockholm has finally produced something else equally amazing for my earballs. Kicking off with Bell and Sebastian-like ’verby vocals and trumpet, “Know The Reason” is a cute, jangly stab at pop immortality. You know how sometimes you just hear that one song – that ONE melody that cuts you to the bone? This is one of those rare tracks, existing in an odd bubble of timelessness that won’t pin it to any specific era, while still sounding contemporarily refreshing.

The track has a vague country tinge to it, which definitely gives it more of an American feel than a European one (a good thing, in our completely unbiased American opinion). And clocking in at 2:47, it even has the perfect pop song length. What more could you want?

The 7-inch also features two more fine cuts, so there’s no way we can’t recommend this wholeheartedly. Wait for it to rain, pull this out of its sleeve, and drop the needle.

Moon Types are from Sweden and their new ‘Know The Reason’ EP is bright, sparkling Scandipop that pulses with anticipation. “If you think the time is now, you couldn’t be more right” stresses the title (and standout) track on the EP while ‘Do It All Over Again’ charms with its jangly guitars and slurred vocals and ‘Nothing’s Holy’ is indie with a country twang. The three songs are lovely indiepop, the breezy but brief trumpet blasts reminding us of the great Ladybug Transistor, and the whole thing is an indiepop treat that should be snapped up by the discerning before it disappears.

Another day, another great song coming to you from Jigsaw Records. This time the label has teamed up with new Swedish act Moon Types, and dammit if these aren’t some of the enjoyable indiepop songs I’ve come across in the last few weeks.  I like how there’s a Southern rambling in the execution of the guitar chords, accompanied by these great male/female vocal pieces that perfect the purity of pop songwriting. They’ll be releasing their Know the Reason 7″ later this summer, so keep your eyes peeled for your new favorite Swedish band.
