Outer World - Coming Down flexi

Bio: Outer World Pays Homage to Experimental Psych-Rock Legends The United States of America.

Richmond, Virginia’s retro-futurists Outer World is releasing a limited tour flexi featuring The United States of America’s “Coming Down” and an original electronic meditation on life and death. This is not just a tribute to dear friends lost in 2024 but the autumn cycle in which every leaf becomes a firework and for which the rebirth of spring is dependent. This is the first band studio recording to feature the touring members of the band, which includes Kenneth Close (keyboards/samples), Tracy Wilson (vocals), Erin O’Hare (bass), Nate Rubin (guitar), and Keith Renna (drums).

What is it about The United States of America that lends itself to such high revere in underground ‘60s psychedelic music? Trish Keenan of Broadcast elegantly explains the intrigue of this cult classic group in issue #308 of Wire Magazine:

“I think it's a kind of sonic Alice In Wonderland. Maybe that type of female voice amidst all the strange clanging and gurgling is the appeal. What carries over for me is the idea of psychedelia as a door to another way of thinking about sound and song. Not a world only reachable by hallucinogens but obtainable by questioning what we think is real and right, by challenging the conventions of form and temper.” She said, “What excites me now is the female voice playing games with words and vocal sound while managing to anchor deeper philosophical concerns.”

The second song, “Superior Washing Results,” is named after the Stereolab laundry bag hanging in their recording studio. Infusing the words on the bag into the lyrics, this whimsical band merch morphs into a philosophical mantra about accepting death and grief as important parts of the cycle of life.

These two songs will appear on a one-sided limited red flexi 7” single available November 1st and digitally on all streaming platforms October 11th. In tribute to the original The United States of America LP packaging, which came housed in a hand-stamped paper sleeve, of the 250 copies of Outer World’s flexi, 100 will come in a printed paper wrapper featuring artwork by Sara Gossett who has thoughtfully recreated USA’s album art to feature the members of Outer World.
